A Farewell from “The Mailman”

April 20, 2016

To all my customers, my friends, in Maximo Moorings;

I will be retiring June, 30, 2016. I want to thank you for making the past 10 years so enjoyable. I have been fortunate to share in your lives; marriage, children, watching these children grow, move-ins, move-outs, and sadly, many friends passing. I have walked more miles in the best and worst of weather than I care to think about, but always knew you were looking out for me.

I am excited about the plans my wife and I are making. We will both be volunteering at the C. W. “Bill” Young VA Hospital (Bay Pines). Participating in activities at the American Legion, Post 273 (Madiera Beach). We also look forward to joining the Big Brother/Big Sister program. Along with some traveling and beach walking, we will try to fit in some relaxation.

So as I say good-bye over the next few weeks I want you to know, I will miss you and I will always cherish your friendship. I hope to run into you sometime around town or on the beach, and who knows, I may just show up at one of your wonderful community functions.

Sincerely,

Gordon Eaves, AKA, “The Mailman”

Maximo Marina Rumors Cleared

An e-mail sent to us from Lee Hicks to share with our residents of Maximo Moorings.

————————-

I just want to clear up some rumors.

The canal that runs to Maximo Marina is wholly owned by the marina ownership group. As I understand it, it was dredged to have access to the marina. Currently Maximo needs to approve all docks that are on the canal either for new construction or additions and major repairs.

Usually a dock contractor brings me a drawing and consent form, I sign it and keep as a record. I don’t think we will have any problems with this continuing.

Some of the criteria we look at are;

Length – We are no longer approving docks longer that 40’ into the channel. The existing docks that are longer than that can stay. However, the property owner on the opposite side of the canal will have to limit their dock so as not to exceed a total of 80’ total length for both docks.

Width – As long as the docks meet the length requirement, the width is a matter between the property owners.

The reasons for these measures are that over the years, boar builders have been making boats beamier (Wider). We commissioned a hydro study recently for depths and have found that the channel cannot support 2 boats crossing without the length requirements listed above.

Also I have heard (rumors) that Maximo Marina is going to start charging for the use of docks/ I do know that in some communities where this is the case, the owners do charge an annual fee and if the docks are on State or Federal bottom lands an annual CZM (coastal zone management) fees have to be paid.

Maximo marina has never charged for the use in the past and I have not been told otherwise that policy will change. I cannot say if this will ever change, but again, it has not even been discussed, as far as I know. Enjoy your docks.

I also heard that Maximo Marina is closing 37th St. in front of the marina. Wow, how do these things get started? That is a county road and only the county could make that decision, and of course they would have to involve all the communities it touches. We have not requested any changes to 37th St.

Best,

Lee Hicks

Marina to Seafood Shack: Close It Up!

Today, as I was reading daily Facebook news, I happened to stumble upon this saddening post by Maximo Seafood Shack.  Honestly at first, I thought it was an April Fools joke but apparently it’s not…

Ahoy Friends and Neighbors.

This is the hardest notice I have had to write to all of my loyal friends and customers since the inception of Maximo Seafood Shack on May 8, 2011. This morning, the management of Maximo Marina notified me that Maximo Seafood Shack must be off premise by August 1, 2016. Needless to say I am saddened and a bit shocked by the sudden news as I was told a few months ago that the dock in which the Shack sits on would be the last piece to be renovated, and that they would try to work with us to create a new Shack on the land near the front parking lot.

The management also expressed their excitement about tearing down the marina and building a mega yacht facility, insisting that the community, the mayor and the city is on board with their plans. At this point I am uncertain about the time frame at which I will be closing the doors to Maximo Seafood Shack; however I am certain it will be necessary to do so before August 1st. Maximo Seafood Shack is one of the last true fish houses left in Florida. With that said, I hope to see you all on the dock before we are forced to shut down this truly unique and special piece of Florida history.
